Sibber is the newest member of our crew on our sailboat the S/V Karenann.  Sibber is  a Schipperke who was born in April 2009.

The name Sibber comes from a sailor character from my childhood.  It's a completely made-up name.

Schips are wonderful, smart, funny and energetic dogs.  Sibber is no exception.

February 2010 Update

SIBBER'S BACKGROUND - Five great rescue organizations; Schipperke Net, CSC, Midwest, Ohio, and the Foundation worked together with independent rescuers around the country to save 39 surviving Schipperkes seized in a raid on a Kentucky backyard commercial breeder accused of animal cruelty among other charges.

The dogs - which include nursing puppies, pregnant mothers, young adults, and seniors -  were surrendered to rescue by the Animal Control that originally took custody of and provided legal protection for them. None of these dogs had been cared for properly prior to seizure. They all underwent extensive testing and full veterinary care.

SCHIPPERKE HISTORY - The Schipperke is also known as the "Belgian Barge Dog", "Little Captain" and "Little Black Devil". Originating in Belgium, Schipperkes were first noted in the writings of the monk Wenceslas in the 15th Century.

In the 1800s Belgian gentlemen would craft special brass collars for their Schipperkes and proudly walk their dogs through town.

Schipperkes also served as watchdogs and ratters on barges, keeping an eye on the cargo and befriending the horses that towed the barge.  It is also said that they would warn their captains of oncoming boats and other barges in heavy fog.  Kind of like an early radar but without the complicated electronics.

Sibber's mother was one of the pregnant mothers that were rescued.  Sibber, his brother, his sister and his mother came to the foster home of Barbara and Al Lewis in Valdosta, Ga. earlier when the pups were just two weeks old..
